Septic Inspections in the Ohio Valley

A septic tank spends its whole life sealed and buried. The one moment anyone can see inside it is when it has been emptied and the access is off — so that is when we look.

Every tank we pump gets looked over: the tank itself, and the baffles. Whatever we find, you hear it on the day.

What There Is to See With the Tank Open

A baffle that has corroded or broken away stops doing its job quietly. Nothing changes inside the house. What changes is that solids start travelling out of the tank with the liquid, and where they go is the drainfield — the part of a septic system you cannot pump out and cannot cheaply replace.

That is the case for looking while the tank is open rather than waiting for a symptom. By the time a failing baffle shows itself as slow drains or wet ground, the damage it has been doing is usually several years old.

So the look comes as part of a pump-out , because an inspection of a full tank tells you very little. If the lid has vanished under the grass, finding and uncovering it is part of the job too.

What we check

The Things We Look At

  • The condition of the tank itself, now that the walls are visible
  • The baffles, which are what keep solids from leaving with the liquid
  • Whether the access and lid are sound, or need a riser to reach the surface
  • How much had built up since the last time it was emptied
  • Anything on the surface nearby that does not look right — wet ground, settling

If something has gone, you hear about it on the day, with the tank still open so you can see what we are describing. What putting it right involves is a conversation we have then — see septic repairs .

Tell Us Which Kind of Look You Need

People ask for a septic inspection for all sorts of reasons: a system that has never been looked at, a rental being taken on, drains that have started running slow, or a sale going through.

Say which yours is when you call. A formal inspection tied to a property sale or a lender is a specific job with specific paperwork attached, and we would rather tell you up front whether we are the right people for it than have you find out afterwards.

We are licensed and insured in Ohio and West Virginia. We are not licensed to provide septic services in Pennsylvania.

FAQs

Septic Inspection Questions

What do you actually look at?

The condition of the tank itself and its baffles, with the tank emptied and the access open. That is the only point at which the inside of a septic system is visible, which is why the look happens then rather than on a separate visit.

Does the tank have to be pumped first?

In practice, yes. Looking into a full tank tells you very little — the parts that matter are under the liquid. Once it is emptied the tank walls and the baffles can be seen properly.

Will you tell me what you found?

Before we leave, in plain terms, while the tank is still open and you can look at it too. If everything is sound we say so and you will not hear from us until the next pump-out is due.

Do you do inspections for a house sale or a lender?

Call or text and say that is what you need. A formal inspection tied to a sale or a mortgage is a specific job with specific paperwork, and we would rather tell you up front whether it is one we take on than have you find out later.

Are you licensed to do this work?

Wetherell is licensed and insured in Ohio and West Virginia. We are not licensed to provide septic services in Pennsylvania.

When can I reach you?

Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–9 p.m., by phone or text. Emergency work outside those hours is based on availability and on the weather.
